The Congress-led opposition is unlikely to support BJP-led NDA's pick for President Ram Nath Kovind and sources say it may field leading agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan in July 2017 Presidential Election.

Congress leaders are still to contact Swaminathan, Who is considered the father of India's Green Revolution. The party wants a consensus over his name after discussing it with other members of the alliance.

Congress insiders said that the party wants a people's President rather than a 'political' one.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar may also be considered as Opposition's nominee.Apart from her, former bureaucrat Gopal Krishna Gandhi's name may also come under consideration.

Some Congress leaders admitted that numbers are certainly in favour of the NDA and the party may just offer a token fight and the main Opposition party's decision to contest the Presidential election is aimed at consolidating the front before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
