Tamil Nadu MLAs today approved a 100 per cent salary hike for themselves. The MLAs would now get a monthly salary of Rs 1.5 lakh, a massive hike from their previous salary of Rs 55,000 per month.

The announcement regarding salary hike was made by CM E Palaniswami in the state Assembly today. The generous hike in salary that the Tamil Nadu MLAs have gifted themselves has come at a time when farmers of the state are protesting demanding loan waiver.

During the course of the protest, the farmers have turned to increasingly desperate measures to direct attention to their issues. They have shaved their heads and half their moustaches, kept mice and snakes in their mouths, conducted mock funerals, flogged themselves and even carried skulls which they claimed were of farmers who had committed suicide due to debt pressure.

Moments before Palaniswami announced the salary hike for state MLAs, a similar demand was put forth by Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agrawal. "Our salary is lesser than our secretaries," Naresh Agrawal said amid chaotic scenes in the Rajya Sabha.

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma also echoed similar sentiments while demanding a pay hike for MPs. On an average leaving aside the allowances, an MP gets a total fixed sum of Rs 1,40,000 per month and annual fixed salary is Rs 16,80,000.

If allowances are factored in taking average, it comes over Rs 1,51,800 per month and Rs 18,22,000 annually. Total cost to country of an MP stands at Rs 2,91,800 per month and Rs 35,02,000 per annum.
