The woman, now in her 50's, was confined in the room for alleged "unnatural behavior" and it was an NGO which informed the police about her following which she was rescued.
She was kept in a room with no electricity while the rest of the the house was occupied by her brother's family.
When the police rescued her on Tuesday from her maternal house in Goa's Candolim area, they found her in a room with urine all around. She was given food through a slit in the door.
The rescued woman was sent for medical examination and then admitted to the Panaji based Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior.
An offence has been booked under section 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Panel Code, Police said.
