Prime Minister Narendra Modi may trigger a rejig of his Cabinet in mid-August in which he may drop some of the non-performers from his team and include new faces.

According to insiders, PM Modi and BJP president Amit Shah have had discussions over Cabinet reshuffle with an aim at 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Four major ministries, including the crucial defence department, is without dedicated minister.

PM Modi had last reshuffled his cabinet in July, 2016. HRD minister Smriti Irani was shifted to textiles and Sadananda Gowda was moved to the statistics ministry from law.

Smriti Irani is now with Information and Broadcasting Ministry. M Venkaiah Naidu's almost certain election as the next vice president will leave two heavyweight portfolios without a Cabinet minister.

Two key ministries - defence and environment - are without a full-time minister. Finance minister Arun Jaitley and science and technology minister Harsh Vardhan are holding the additional charge of these two portfolios respectively.

Naidu, whose candidature as the NDA's vice presidential candidate, was in-charge of the ministries of information and broadcasting and urban development.
